Frame Off Restoration Completed 2017:
This is a 1979 VW Superbeetle convertible that has just been restored. It was finished Summer 2017 and is in fantastic condition! These cars are highly sought after since 1979 was the last year that the “Super Beetle” was sold in the US and the majority of the cars have been tucked away. Examples of these cars that are both low mileage and running well are difficult to come by. This is due to the fact that these cars came with electronic fuel injection which was difficult to maintain if the cars were not driven regularly. That being said, when the car was found, it had been sitting for many years. The previous owner had a rebuilt engine installed at 85k miles and the body only had 93k miles on it. At the time the car was not running due to the aforementioned injectors. The body of the car was removed and the chassis was sandblasted, new floor pans were welded in and everything was coated in epoxy primer, urethane black paint, and 3M undercoating. Next the urethane control arm bushings, ball joints, both complete tie rods, front struts, rear shocks, transmission mounts, clutch cable and guide tube, accelerator cable, heater cable, emergency brake cables, complete brake system, all steel lines, all rubber brake hoses, all wheel cylinders, all brake shoes, master cylinder, brake light switches, fuel tank, gauge sender, and all fuel and vapor recovery lines were replaced. The engine was still “like new” since it had very low miles since being rebuilt, but all outside items were replaced. This included the starter, alternator, clutch, new vacuum advance distributor, all plug wires, electric fuel pump, both heater boxes, and muffles with stainless tailpipes. Cosmetically, the car was top frame sanded, primed and painted satin black, got a new headliner, got a new black top installed with all new cables, straps and rear glass frame stapling insert, hinge covers, all top weather stripping, a new black parade boot cover and sun visors. The interior has had all seats completely taken apart, frames repainted, new foam cushions and seat covers installed, new seat slides, and a charcoal color carpet set. The body had a good paint job when it was found and needed only minor work before it was repainted. It has a base coat/clear coat urethane paint job in the original color of “River Blue.” It has a new rear window shelf welded in. It has original rockers, heater channels, side conv supports, and a new pair of running boards. All the rubber weather stripping around the hood, decklid, and body to chassis seals are new. The doors have new NOS German seals. All side chrome is new along with all of the attaching clips. It has a brand new shaded windshield and a new seal with the chrome bead as it had originally. Wiper arms were bead blasted and painted the correct satin black and 2 new Bosch wiper blades and a new washer jet. Many chrome dress up items have also been added including: door handle shields, front hood handle shield, front air grill trim, rear fender splash shields. It has an Alpine stereo system in the dash with a new antennae and a cable to run to the rear window well for a CD changer that can be added later. The VDO clock keeps time and the speedometer/odometer works properly as does the fresh air fan and heater (Although this is a fair weather car and shouldn’t be driven in winter conditions). It has the original sport rims with all the original center caps and the special plastic 16 lug nut caps. New tires were recently put on the front, and a front alignment was done. The rear tires and spares are used but in “like new” condition. If you are looking for a dependable ‘79 that is a blast to drive this is one for your consideration. It never fails to get thumbs up and attract attention wherever it is being driven.
